Horsetail Milkweed (Asclepias subverticillata) is a herbaceous perennial that is native to the south-central and southwestern United States. The Henry’s Elfin is a brown colored butterfly in the Gossamer Wing Family (Lycaenidae). This butterfly flies in the midwest and eastern United States and in southern Canada from Manitoba to Nova Scotia from March to June depending on location. It’s favored habitat is barrens and open woodlands. The Henry’s Elfin feeds on a number of plants including most prominently eastern red (Cercis canadensis) and maple-leaf viburnum (Viburnum acerifolium). It has also shown an appetite for glossy buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula), an introduced species.
